Woody Allen Immortalized in Spain
While shooting Vicky Cristina Barcelona in Oviedo, Spain, Woody Allen and his cast found out that he had been immortalized in the form of a bronze statue.
According to WENN, the film’s stars Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem were touring the city one night when they accidentally discovered Allen’s metal counterpart.
Cruz explained, “We went out one night in Oviedo and we ran into this bronze sculpture of Woody. They love him.
“We took pictures with the sculpture, hugging it, and gave the photos to Woody.”
It turns out that the statue, which was made a part of the city back in 2002, was erected to honor the filmmaker with the city’s Prince of Asturias cultural award.
Allen said that he’s completely baffled why a Spanish town has chosen to construct a statue to honor him.
“Oviedo is a lovely town in Spain. I went there a couple of times, and, without asking me, they erected this statue. I never saved someone from drowning and they put a statue up of me in the town.
“I thought it was a joke. Maybe when I leave town they take it in and when Brad Pitt comes to town, they put his statue out.
“It’s a good statue of me; I’ve got my sports jacket on and corduroy trousers.
“People keep stealing the glasses [though]. They’re welded on. Guys come with blow torches at night and they take the glasses off and steal them.”
