'Madagascar' Ousts 'High School Musical 3' from Top Spot

The all-star animated sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa has stormed the US box office and toppled High School Musical 3: Senior Year from the number one spot.

The family film out-grossed 2005’s Madagascar by 35% and raked in an outstanding $63.5 million after its weekend opening. Meanwhile, High School Musical has dropped two places to third place with $9.3 million.

Role Models, starring Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott, grabbed the second position with revenues totaling $19.2 million. The Angelina Jolie-starrer titled Changeling stayed in the fourth spot with earnings of $7.2 million, while comedy flick Porno, fell two places to the fifth spot with $6.5 million.

Escape 2 Africa features the voices of Ben Stiller as Alex and Chris Rock as Marty the zebra. The movie also features Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer.

DreamWorks’ Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa features the story of former occupants of a zoo in New York City who get stranded in the remote shores of Madagascar. Alex the lion, his peers, and the penguins try to solve their dilemma by repairing an old crashed plane that would take them back. But as the plane flew over Africa, the zoo-raised group encounters species of their own kind and discovers their roots.
