John Cusack Stalker to Stand Trial
A woman taken into custody on charges of stalking actor John Cusack has been found to be “mentally competent to stand trial,” according to a US judge.
Emily Leatherman, 33, was arrested in March near the actor’s Malibu home and subsequently charged with stalking.
However, the case was postponed while the alleged stalker was under evaluation by a psychiatrist appointed by the court.
After examining the doctor’s reports, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Susan Speer found Leatherman to be “mentally competent” and was then ordered to stand trial on Sept. 9.
She was also charged with counts of petty theft and violating a restraining order, which the Con Air actor got against her in 2006.
Leatherman has been in custody since she was arrested and, if convicted, faces a maximum of three years in prison.
Judge Speer came up with her ruling on the basis that Leatherman was “delusional and paranoid.”
Cusack, 42, stars in Shanghai, where he plays an American intelligence official who examines a friend's death in Japanese-occupied Shanghai in 1941 a few months prior to the Pearl Harbor attack.
Shanghai also features Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat, Chinese actress Gong Li and Japan's Ken Watanabe.
